There was a distinct American feel for the records attempted on U.S. soil with both cowboys and cheerleaders making the grade this year. Fort Worth, TX played host to the record for Most People Twirling Lassos Simultaneously, with 23 range-hardened wranglers taking the crown at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo. While moving east of the Mississippi to Memphis, TN, several hundred cheerleaders from the Universal Cheerleading Association got into the record-breaking spirit to break the Largest Cheerleading Dance (297). In New York City, the famous restaurant and dessert shrine, Serendipity III, created the Largest Cup of Hot Chocolate, which reached a volume of four gallons and measured 11 inches tall by 14 inches wide. Cosmopolitan Magazine, Maybelline New York and the USO joined forces in multiple locations around New York City to break the record for Largest Collection of Lipstick Prints in 12 Hours with 1,817 pairs of lip prints. Finally, all across the U.S. the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) anticipates bringing 300,000 kids together today to beat the record for Most People Sport Stacking Simultaneously with participants from 1,406 schools.

"Guinness World Records Day grows bigger and better every year, and the fifth annual celebration has been the most memorable yet," said Craig Glenday, editor of Guinness World Records. "Thousands of the world's most talented - and unique - people tried their hand at numerous world records, and the result has been nothing short of inspiring."

The CBS Early Show hosted Guinness World Record events live on air throughout the week including an amazing attempt on the record for Most Apples Chopped in the Air Using a Sword in One Minute performed by martial arts master Kenneth Lee, while Paul "Dizzy Hips" Blair broke the record for Most Hula Hoops Hooped Simultaneously (132). Other record breakers who sported their achievements on the show were Asha Mandela with the Longest Dreadlocks at 19 feet and 6.5 inches and Jake Lonsway with the Largest Cling Film Ball at 281 pounds 8 ounces and 11 feet 6 inches across.

Guinness World Records Day was celebrated in countries around the planet, with numerous unique record attempts transpiring; Australia attempted the Largest Bikini Parade at the Opera House in Sydney, Finland turned up the heat with Most Nationalities in A Sauna (76) and the Furthest Distance to Pull a Double-Decker Bus With the Hair (69 feet 6 inches) was broken in the UK.
